About
Isle of Arran Distillers is situated off the southwest coast of Scotland in the village of Lochranza on the Isle of Arran. Their premium, hand-crafted whiskies are made from some of the purest mountain waters in Scotland and are widely recognized as some of the finest malts in the world. Arran is the first of the new wave of Scotch distillers built exclusively to produce single malt rather than blends. Isle of Arran is the only distillery on the island and remains an independent company. Distillery manager James MacTaggart has 30+ years of experience in whiskey production and combines traditional distillation methods with modern technology – washbacks are made from Oregon pine instead of stainless steel, the stills are small copper pots with long narrow necks and the barley blend is unpeated Optic, Braemar and Oxbridge. Each Isle of Arran whiskey is aged in casks, non-chill filtered with no added color and bottled at 46% abv versus the normal 40% abv. The unique microclimate of the Isle allows the malts to mature more quickly, encouraging early development of desirable secondary aromas and flavors.
Lightly peated at 20ppm, the mythical The Arran Malt Machrie Moor Single Malt Scotch Whisky has proved a popular addition to the Arran range. On the west coast of the Isle of Arran lies a windswept and mystical peat bog called Machrie Moor. Bronze Age stone circles and standing stones are strewn across its barren, undulating terrain. One of the stone circles is known as Fingal’s Cauldron Seat, where sits a stone with a carved hole. The legendary warrior giant Fingal is said to have tethered his favourite dog Bran to this stone. This peated expression of the Arran Single Malt perfectly captures the rugged beauty and lore of the landscape. Unleash the legend that is Machrie Moor.
Tasting Notes
NOSE: Fresh and vibrant with an evident influence on an Ex-Bourbon Cask. Tropical notes of pineapple, peaches, and a distinctive coconut aroma dominate while a pleasant touch of peat reek in the background adds an interesting dimension to this vivacious combination
PALATE: The palate gives a lot of citrus freshness that mixes beautifully with rich spice and a hint of peat smoke. A few drops of water reveal even more of the peaty smokiness that is wonderfully balanced by a delicious honey sweetness and vanilla.
FINISH: Crisp and clean with lingering smoke and sweet vanilla.
