Bruichladdich is one of the 9 operational distilleries on the Scottish island of Islay, built in 1881. Today Bruichladdich uses all original equipment and traditional methods, utilizing barley only from the local farmers on the island to produce exceptionally high quality scotch whisky, which is always non chill-filtered, coloring free, and bottled either at 46% alc/vol, or cask strength (check, check, and check!). Bruichladdich produces an unpeated whisky, such as their Laddie line up, and heavily peated malts under Port Charlotte sub label, as well as the Octomore single malt, marketed as the peatiest single malt on the planet. Bruichladdich distillery has the tallest stills on Isla, therefore their malts are known for their elegant and refined, floral taste profile.
Bruichladdich Octomore 6.1 Scottish Barley is the sixth core release in the cult Octomore series and another limited opportunity to discover what happens when Olympic levels of peat are caressed by the sublime elegance of the Bruichladdich stills. This is another classic Octomore, peated to 167 ppm. But at this degree of peating it’s not about ultimate strength, it’s about achieving the exceptional balance between brooding power of the incredibly peated barley and the finesse and poise of one of the world’s most elegant and sophisticated spirits – about craft, not ultimate strength. Bottled at cask strength, 57% alc./vol.
NOSE: Sea spray, spindrift, wet sea weed and hints of oily iodine, peat smoke with cracked black peppercorn and notes of heather flowers, lemon balm and water mint.
PALATE: Malted barley then the sweet oak, giving notes of vanilla, toasted rye bread and walnuts, burst of fresh lime, poached apple, pear and peat, lots of it.
FINISH: Very long, a sweetness note, ash, seaweed, touch of spice, and smoke.
